17 LOS ANGELES COMMUNIT Y COLLEGE DISTRICT West Los Angeles College Located in the hills of Culver City,West Los Angeles College (WLAC) has a small, private school atmosphere with park-like landscaping and a panoramic view from Playa del Rey to Century City. The student body of18,000, diverse in age and background, pursues university transfer, career degrees and certifications, and continuing education. Students can also take advantage of the strong distance education program at WLAC which has been recognized as one of the Top10 in the state. In 2018,WLAC’s signature programs in health sciences, film and television production crafts, aviation technology and computer science continued to excel as new offerings were launched, including creativity studies and California’s first community college-based Climate Change Studies degree. WLAC also became an authorized Amazon Web Services (AWS) training academy, preparing students to be AWS Certified Solutions Architects. Because barriers to student success are often encountered outside the classroom,WLAC is implementing a comprehensive slate of wraparound services. In the first phase of this initiative,WLAC established a food pantry and professional attire wardrobe. Both were accomplished with volunteers and support from community partners. A deepening relationship with Culver City has also yielded expanded dual enrollment at Culver City High and a nine- month leadership program for Culver City residents interested in increasing their engagement with community assets and issues. A C L O S E R L O O K • 2018 marked the 50th commencement ceremony at WLAC and kicked off a year-long celebration of the College’s 50th anniversary in 2019. • The graduation of WLAC’s first baccalaureate class of 28 students in dental hygiene was history-making. It was the largest cohort of graduates from any of the15 California community colleges authorized to offer a Bachelor’s degree in a select subject. • Year Up, with its nationally proven track record of moving young adults from minimum wage to meaningful careers in just one year, doubled the size of its Southern California academy at WLAC. • WLAC is home to the only College2Career (C2C) program in Southern California.
